Does creatine help your brain? What the evidence shows

You probably know creatine as the gym powder. White scoop, post-workout shake, the stuff lifters swear makes them look fuller.

Here’s what’s less known: a growing pile of research is looking at what creatine does upstairs, not just to muscles. The results are interesting, if a bit more complicated than the gym-bro version.

This isn’t a pitch for a product. It’s a look at what the studies say, what they don’t, and who might benefit most.

First, why would creatine touch the brain at all?

The most consistent finding isn’t about making you sharper on a good night’s sleep. It’s about protecting your brain when you haven’t slept.

A 2026 study in Nutrients gave people a single high dose of creatine and then kept them awake. The creatine group held up better on cognitive tests than the placebo group, their thinking deteriorated less as the sleep deprivation wore on.

Early investigations indicate a positive trend for creatine supplementation as an intervention for acute sleep deprivation, though effects may vary by cognitive domain. Despite favorable early results, research is sparse, and future high-quality trials are needed.

For anyone who’s ever pulled an all-nighter, worked shifts, or has a newborn, that’s a finding with real-life relevance. Fatigue hits cognition hard; creatine appears to soften that blow.

The mixed picture: healthy people on normal sleep

Here’s where the honest part comes in. When researchers look at healthy, well-rested adults doing cognitive tests, the results get murkier.

A 2024 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Nutrition concluded creatine supplementation had a positive effect on some cognitive measures. But a separate 2024 systematic review in Behavioural Brain Research was far more skeptical, arguing the evidence doesn’t support a meaningful cognitive benefit in healthy people.

Two reviews, two conclusions. That’s normal in nutrition science, but it’s worth being straight about: the case for “creatine makes everyone smarter” is weak. The case for “creatine helps in specific high-demand situations” is stronger.

Who might actually benefit most

Three groups keep coming up in the research as most likely to see something:

  • People who don’t eat meat. Creatine is found almost entirely in animal products. Vegetarians and vegans have measurably lower creatine stores in their brains. When they supplement, the effect on cognition tends to be larger, you can’t boost something that’s already maxed out.
  • Older adults. Brain creatine declines with age. A 2026 RCT in older adults (75+) is currently testing creatine combined with training, looking at whether it supports both muscle and cognition.
  • People under sleep or cognitive stress. The sleep-deprivation finding points here. When the brain is pushed, the buffer creatine provides seems to matter more.

The mood connection

There’s also early work on creatine and mental health, depression and fatigue, but it’s genuinely early. A 2026 systematic review in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry looked at creatine’s effect on mental disorders and called for more research rather than drawing firm conclusions. Worth knowing about, not worth overstating.

If you’re a healthy adult who sleeps well and eats meat, you’re probably not missing much by skipping it. If you’re vegan, sleep-deprived, or older, it’s one of the more interesting supplements to watch, and arguably the best-studied place to start.
